Educational Events Tuesday & Thursday, July 20 & 22 In keeping with its mission, the Evergreen Jazz Festival is proud to offer workshops for student musicians young and old with instruction provided by the Queen City Jazz Band. (Information and Registration Form) Parents and friends are welcome to attend and observe, and advanced participants have an opportunity to perform at the Festival with QCJB. All participants receive a free Festival badge. Friday, July 23, 12:00 Noon This is the traditional Festival kickoff event and an opportunity for everyone to learn more about this unique American art form of jazz. The two-hour program is another way the Festival strives to meet its Mission Statement commitment to jazz education. This year vocal great Wende Harston will chronicle major female jazz singers such as Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, Ida Cox and Ella Fitzgerald. Wende's extensive knowledge and entertaining personality promise to make this another informative and thoroughly enjoyable event. Pianist Hank Troy, another great, will accompany and most likely add commentary from his own jazz history storehouse. The presentation takes place in the Elks Lodge Ballroom and is free and open to the public.Additional Information “There are two keys to truly understanding and appreciating this music: knowledge and maturity.” These words by jazz icon Jim Cullum sum up the reasons behind the Evergreen Jazz Festival's ambitious jazz education program. We support students in public school programs but also serve those “outside the box” (e.g. home-schooled students and adult student-musicians.) We feel that we have developed an ambitious program since 2003, and we plan to continue expanding our efforts to educate students of all ages about this truly American art form. Contributions by individuals directed toward Education are meaningful when we apply for grants. If you appreciate these efforts, please contact Dr. Ed Cannava, 303-328-7277 or at ecan11@msn.com to offer your support. |
